Mountain Lion in Brushy Creek?

This small news item on the front page of The Hill Country News print edition, May 7, caught my eye:

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office was contacted on May 4 about a "large cat" seen in South Williamson County.

The large cat, possibly a mountain lion, was seen in the area of Great Oaks and Racine Drive in the Brushy Creek Subdivision around 11 a.m. on Sunday. A resident took a picture of the cat's tail as it wandered off behind a tree. It is unclear from the picture exactly what kind of cat it is.

Anyone who sees any large cats should call 911.

A couple of items from the Leander Police Dept.

A couple of items of interest from the Leander Police Department:

1) May 19 is the start of Click IT or TICKET. This is the big campaign to make sure everyone has their seatbelt on and especially that children are secured properly in the car. By the way, if you are pulled over for whatever reason (speeding, running a light, etc) DO NOT remove your seatbelt to start searching for your documentation. You will be ticketed for not wearing your seatbelt. The officer does not know if you just unbuckled it or if you have been riding around without it on. Wait for them to approach you and give you instructions. If you're interested, here are more tips on what to do or not do if you've been pulled over.

2) Citizen's Police Academy starts June 9 and runs through August 4. This is every Monday night from 6-9pm. Here is what their handout says about this program:

The Citizen's Police Academy will provide a new understanding of law enforcement through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. The Academy will provide you with training very similar to a police recruit.

This nine-week course is filled with useful information and adventures that will provide you with memories for a lifetime. This dynamic program is offered to Leander residents who are at least 18 years of age and have no felony convictions. The Academy is offered at no charge to participants.

Participants enjoy the opportunity to learn new things and to meet other members of the community. Topics of instruction and activities will include:

- Criminal Justice System Overview
- Legalities of Arrest, Search and Seizure
- Use of Force by Law Enforcement
- Police Officer Survival
- Crime Prevention
- Traffic Stops - Techniques and Practical Exercises
- Firearms training and Practical Exercises
- Community Policing
- Criminal Investigations
- Crime Scene Investigation

Enrollment is limited and the academy classes fill up quickly. Applications are available at the Leander Police Department. Any questions regarding the 2008 Leander Citizen's Police Academy can be directed to:
