Austin Traffic is Now on iPhone

From Austin Startup, April 17, 2009...

Round Rock-based Kerlmax has released the latest version of their Austin Traffic iPhone application. Google Maps has a map-based indicator of traffic, but this app has traffic cameras on the major highways in Austin, plus a list of exactly where incidents are happening. You just don’t get that kind of pinpoint accuracy any other way.

The data comes from the city and the Texas Department of Transportion, so if there are data glitches you’ll have to blame them. It would be cool to see some sort of crowdsourced traffic reporting for the iPhone. Perhaps they’re saving that for version 3.0!

Quick fix traffic solution to Hwy 183 on-ramp woes

From News 8 Austin, February 12, 2009...

Drivers commuting down Southbound Highway 183 through Cedar Park say the on-ramp entrance near Lakeline Mall Drive can become a parking lot with traffic at times.

Enough complaints from drivers have prompted action and possible relief at that on-ramp entrance to Hwy 183.

"If you're not in the line to get on, it's just almost impossible to get over. People won't let you over," commuter Sam Inman said.

Leander police receive grant to increase traffic patrols

The Leander Police Department is beefing up its patrols along major intersections to try to decrease the number of injury wrecks and get drivers to slow down.

The department received a grant this month through the Texas Department of Transportation for $23,702 to pay officers overtime to increase patrols in problem areas.

Last year, 87 of the city's 129 collisions resulted in an injury, according to the transportation department's records. Most of those were caused by someone running a red light or stop sign, according to the state agency.

Those statistics showed problem areas in Leander: the 183-A tollway, Ronald Reagan Boulevard, East Crystal Falls Parkway, Bagdad Road and Parmer Lane. Increased patrols will mainly focus on speed enforcement and intersection traffic control, said Lt. Greg Minton, a spokesman with the Leander Police Department.
