Leander approves TOD plan

From Hill Country News, March 30, 2009...

Leander citizens packed the Pat Bryson Municipal Auditorium last Thursday to see if fireworks would happen over the concept plan for Transit Oriented Development. The plan went before the Planning and Zoning Commission at a special-called meeting at 6 p.m. and then before the council's regularly-scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Both the council and P and Z passed the plan with only one dissenting vote each.

A few residents spoke out against the concept plan during the council meeting, saying there are no connector roads between Old Town Leander and the TOD.

Leander transit-oriented development

From Impact News, February 20, 2009...

Mobility to and within Leander’s transit-oriented development will improve with the completion of about $12 million in roads, said Pix Howell, Leander urban design officer.
“We’ll have a landing strip for development once we get these roads finished, and they’ll probably be finished about mid-2010,” he said.

An engineer has been hired to design the Leander T, consisting of the extensions of San Gabriel Parkway and CR 273.

The project received $4.03 million in funding from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. The grant does not cover engineering, which is being paid for by landowners and is to be reimbursed over time by the associated tax increment financing district.

Transit Oriented Development

The City of Leander has a nice web page about the TOD.

"The TOD is the area in the northeast quadrant of the City, including “Old Town”, areas west of US 183, south of FM 2243, and going north, almost to the San Gabriel River. It is made up of “Transect Zones” that describe the levels of density and intensity (i.e. T1=rural to T3=suburban to T5 and T6=urban). The Transect Map (TOD Master plan) shows the transect districts for the TOD."
